I agree also. Even the simple ones can have a learning curve, but on my trip and while playing with my Garmin GPS 12, there were only two fuctions I needed. One was the compass. As you go you MARK (press MARK button) and that place is put in your GPS as 1 or 2 etc. or you can type in CAMP, etc. Then if you need to go to camp, you go to your list of marks and click CAMP, then to the compass screen and an arrow points to camp until you get there. That works most of the time unless you are in a maze of islands and channels where the arrow may be pointing toward camp but you have land masses in front of you that are blocking you. Then your GPS always has you Longitude and Latitude on screen. I was using McKensie Maps that have Lon.& Lat. markings. and by tracing across your map, where they intersect is where you are at. Then you can see what land mass is blocking you and how to get around it. They also have a feature called a bread crumb trail that leaves a dotted line of you trail on the screen. When you go in reverse an other line is drawn and if you get too far off your orginial line you can correct your corse back to it. I never used this feature except playing with it at home.
