If the water is infected with nasty microorganisms then you have brought them into a nice dark moist area where they can grow and maybe make you sick. Things like polio, dysentary, diptheria, typhoid fever and other waterborne diseases can be really nasty. If you are getting a severe headache or a fever of any kind, call your doctor immediately. Modern drugs can do wonders if you use them in time.

Several of the beaches by me (lake Michigan/Chicago) were closed to swimmers for Labor Day because of high microbe counts. It would seem to me that a boater who got wet in the water would be exposed to the same microbes that a swimmer would-- and that is considered unsafe.

Then again, this most certainly does not happen every time you get water up your nose. No need to be a paranoid hypochondriac, just be alert to symptoms of disease.

You can always get a nose clip to wear.
