: If so, that would make sense, as the 303 would soak in. Over epoxy, varnish
: or paint, it just sits on the surface.

I put 303 on the deck of a wood boat. The boat had been epoxied and varnished, but the finish was in bad condition. I put on the 303 in an effort to prevent degradation from UV before it could be refinished, as I was going to be paddling it for a month or two in the interim.

When refinishing work began, the sanding to get off the old finishes had the effect of pushing the 303 into the wood - the finish did not mean it wasn't a problem. It's not clear how long it might have taken for the 303 to wear off through ordinary wear and tear had the boat not been sanded. Conceivably putting 303 on a newly refinished wood boat where there is no expectation of refinishing the boat within the lifetime of the 303 might be okay, but I don't know. Given how much problems the 303 created for the people who refinished the boat, I'd think it's not a good idea.

However I am not a woodworker - that's why I sought advice from others who suggested the 303 in the first place, and why I took my boat back to Betsie Bay to refinish instead of doing it myself. From what I heard once I talked to the Betsie Bay folks and others with experience in woodworking, and once the person who suggested the 303 talked to Betsie Bay about it, they all agreed that it was a very bad idea to put 303 on a wood boat.
