I am new to this, but I am deep into my first boat and I cut all my strips with the band saw. I think everyone will find a slightly different way to cut the strips, but here is my limited experience. I took my 15' white cedar boards and hand planed one edge. (I like hand planing, but would not recommend it to anyone that is not interested enough in hand tools to devote some time to learning sharpening, use and plane selection.) I then adjusted my rip fence to compensate for blade lead. I put the convex side of the board against the fence and cut a strip. I then hand planed the board where I just cut, but left the strip with the rough bandsawn edge alone. Then I cut another strip and repeated the whole process of planing and so on. The whole process took me 3 minutes per strip if nothing went wrong. I may have saved a couple strips by the time I got through the board. This bulletin board says a thin kerf table saw blade will provide comparable wood savings, but there doesn't seem to be a good way to cut a severely bowed board on a table saw. The table saw is apparently faster, and I think I will use it for my straight boards next time, despite a slight loss of wood and the annoying noise. By the way, I put the rough side of each strip to the outside so I could sand it easily and that was fine. -scott e.
