Besides the points mentioned by Paul Jacobson, another very obvious reason for building outside is the lack of suitable inside space. Most of my garage has been converted to a photo studio. I can move a narrow boat in on a dolly, but I sure as hell don't want sawdust, sanding dust and epoxy crap inside my studio.
