I also considered building a canoe out of Poplar (Popular) ..it is spelled both ways. I am a forester here in Alabama and see the stuff everyday. Anyway, I finally decided to use Western Red Cedar because I was ready to build my canoe and my Poplar wasn't hardly dry enough yet. After getting the canoe nearly finished I decided to make my own paddles and having 90 bdft of Poplar in the barn it didn't take too long to decide on my wood of choice. The paddles turned out great, so even if you don't use Poplar for the boat you might still consider making some paddles. Good luck.
