Some of us are not sufficiently small or flexible to do the "cowboy entry" into a standard size cockpit. (Knee surgery years ago is one reason why I kayak rather than hike) That is why I'm putting CLC's optional large cockpit (approx. 18"x34" opening) on my LT18.

The downside is you've got a BIG spray skirt. This increases the risk of implosion in big water. Also makes it more difficult to find an "off the rack" spray skirt to fit. (I ordered a custom one from Whetstone)

The way I figure it, the 24" wide LT18 with large cockpit will fit my 6'4", 275 lb. self about like most kayaks fit "normal" people. (I guess "real" kayakers should be about 5'8", 150 lb. and limber in all joints - but that hasn't stopped me from trying)

BTW, the rear deck is 'glassed inside & out, plus I will have a day hatch with extra bulkhead and a carlin behind the cockpit. Also added a 'glass tape "stringer" under the center of the front deck. So I hope I won't have any strength problems - at least with the boat! :)

A little extra reinforcing of the hull and deck are probably a good thing for us "robust" sorts. Might mean a couple pounds extra weight on the boat, but it's not that difficult to add.
