It's the fiberglass and epoxy that gives the coaming it's strength. My concern over the amount of stress this part of the structure is under led me to double the fiberglass layers on the underside of the deck around this area. I can use my hands to lift my weight off the seat and out of the kayak. The hotmelt glue is only to hold the pieces in position until the resin and fiberglass is hardened.
