John,
For a bedding compound you're better off with a marine sealant. 3M has a good line in white and black. Stay away from their 5200 if you may ever want to remove the fixture. Like anything with "marine" connected to it these products aren't cheap, but are gnerally available. I have found some at my local "Big Lots" store were they go for a buck for a tube good for a job like your's.
