On my boat without a rudder I use a simple piece of 3 inch thick closed cell foam block velcroed to the front bulkhead as a footbrace instead of footpeddals. I glued some wood blocks to backup the bulkhead so the force of bracing doesn't dislodge it.

On the boats with rudders (the ones I use for my prolonged paddles) I also add a piece of foam to brace against and just use the balls of my feet to work the rudder peddals. When the rudder is up I just use the foam block to brace with as in the rudderless boats. I have been using this setup for about 10 years and it works great.

Using just footpeddals has always hurt my feet after a prolonged paddle (I like to paddle barefoot) but the slight give of the foam makes it much more comfortable.

: Looking for a rudder setup that allows me to still brace my feet.
: I've used the sliding pedals but want more stability when I've got the rudder
: up.
: I saw a top tab type system where the braces stay fixed and the tops move a
: bit, also saw a continous loop systen that looks good. I don't a;ways use
: the rudder but would like to apply pressure to the paddles.
: I need a rudder for those windy days in the San Juan Islands.
: I will be adding a rudder, like it or not, those of you purist can sit at
: home and talk about kayaking but I plan to use my kayak and have been
: blown around enough to realize that this is reality, It seems as if there
: are to many experts who have never been in a kayak, much less fearing for
: their live when the wind is howling and you paddling like hell to get
: back.
