I don't recall having any trouble with this, but maybe they've changed tapes. Do they still have you place clear plastic over the joint and press it down with bricks? If the tape is a real problem, maybe switching to some strips of 6 oz fabric would be better. The seams will all get glassed on both sides anyway, so it should be strong enough.
