Larry,

I used 3mm Okume Marine Grade Plywood with 6oz tape on the inside (continuous 4oz in the cockpit area), and 4oz fiberglass on the outside with some extra 4oz reinforcing on the bottom of the hull. I sanded between fill coats, to keep the overall thickness to a minimum. Other than that...no special treatment, it even hass full size yakima footbraces.
