Well, it's best to apply the strips so you'll be making beads instead of coves on the trimmed edge.

But sometimes you can't avoid it. In that case Lee Valley makes a minature gouge with a 1/4" dia. It takes a little practice to guide the gouge with a finger down the center of the strip, but gets pretty fast after awhile
