: hi all;
: when i built my wee lassie i cut slots in the edges of the forms and used
: spring clamps to hold the strips while the glue dried. can anyone tell me
: why i shouldn't do the same for my spring run? forms are 1/2"
: plywood.
: the reason i ask is that nobody seems to be useing this method and i'm
: wondering why, since it worked so well for me. to give credit, the method
: is mentioned by mac mccarthy in his book.
: best regards;

Hey Daren

Not a thing! David Barrett, here in Fresno, does exactly that. It works very well, however I would also suggest using 3/4" plywood for the forms and cut the groove a bit less than half. No wood wedges, no L or U shaped blocks and he makes beautiful canoes and yaks. If I could shake him loose of a few photo we took a couple of weeks ago, I would put them up here, or get him to sit down and learn how to do it. But, I have to weezle (?) a dinner out of him and J for that. :) How about it David?? :) These guys really need to see you in action. 4 boats at once!!! And probably build one of those little V.W. dune buggies, completely, while the epoxy sets. And..... Still has time to B.S. with me while he's doing it. Amazing guy!

But, yes it works very well. He uses many clamps and while the "strip to form" clamps hold that part, he also uses the clamps to hold the strips together. Well, you gotta see it! Will see what we can do to get a picture up later. 1/2" ply would probably work alright, but I would recommend using 3/4" ply for forms.
