In Response To: 2 dimensional compound angles for floors of kayak (Violet Cloutier)

: Hi

: I am constructing a wood and canvas kayak that is designed by George Putz. It
: really doesn't describe how to get the compound angles. The question i am
: asking is this: I need to figure out how to get the angles from the strips
: to forms for the floor supports just right. Can anyone give me some tips
: on how to do this? Thanks kindly, Frustrated!!!!!! Violet

hi violet,

i'm not bldg one of these, but from everyone's photos i can see a dumbass quick method.

looks to me as if all the stringers and truss bottom chord are about the same width but if not choose the widest one. Cut many long strips of thin card this thickness wide(looks abt 3/4in). If you can cut well make them exact if you can't wider.

I presume the yak is upside down at this pt(doesnt matter really -easier other way). Get one only slightly wider than the widest pt of the yak straight 1x2 or 1x4 and hang it tight in the first rib floor place under the truss stringer. use an elastic band w/ clip ea side or whatever to hold in place(even clips on the diags'd prob work. cut 5 card strips 5 in long or less with straight cuts close to 90 deg-eyeball and scissors ok. White glue the card strips directly on the board with the ends EXACTLY butting under the stringers and exactly butting the side truss chord. Any strip that's wider than a stringer, exactly butt one corner and put a pencil mark where the stringer is on the other corner.

You now have and EXACT template for this location. EXACT. take out board and lay down on the rib floor pc and mark up. Maybe rationalize the dimensions a bit if not even. And the longish bits of card help you visualize the angles

Rip off(or not-maybe every 5th rib repetition) the paper and start again.

quick, quick, quick. exact, exact, exact.
