Violet,

Rehd's, Bill's, & Roger's ideas for dealing with these measurements look like they would work quite well. I've made a couple of these boats, and the floors are the tricky part. Go over their sites thoroughly as they have done a much better job (then I have) of documenting the process. I hope to complete my documentation sometime soon. I have also built a plywood and fiberglass version of the kayak, that is one of my favorite all around kayaks.

First I get the basic dimensions using a method like the others have used. To transfer the chine angles to the floor, I leave the floor a little long and draw the angle from the flipped floor directly onto it using the chine as a guide. I then tip the floor to the narrowing side on the chines and trace that angle up the side of the floor. The angle has worked almost perfectly every time, for both of the Putz style kayaks that I have made.

I would also sugest cutting a 'V' shape into the tops of the floors in the cockpit area. This way when you put in the sole (where you sit), you will have maximized the interior space, and lowered your center of gravity.

When you get around to the deck, I would recommend a more standard shaped cockpit, and moving the cockpit back 1-1/2" to 2".

: Hi

: I am constructing a wood and canvas kayak that is designed by George Putz. It
: really doesn't describe how to get the compound angles. The question i am
: asking is this: I need to figure out how to get the angles from the strips
: to forms for the floor supports just right. Can anyone give me some tips
: on how to do this? Thanks kindly, Frustrated!!!!!! Violet
