Hi Steve;

A year ago much of the advice for epoxy pre-prep around here recommended a thorough degreasing of the wood surface before glassing. It's still not a bad idea, because (IMHO) any contaminants present in the denatured alcohol (which seems the recommended degreasing agent) probably pale in comparison to skin oils, sweat drops, etc.

The caveat if you do alcohol wash is to never use soluble pigments in your fill material, as it will leach out and stain around any seam you fill. I save wood flour in all colors, and when you do need a small fill, you can usually mix the dust with wood glue to match perfectly.

Don't believe that Rob-guy, who'll lead to to believe no one ever needs a fill - - Even the best-of-the-best have an occasional sliver that separates from the strip and requires attention . . . [VB, VL, SEG] :)

As to whether an alcohol wash is REALLY necessary, . . . I doubt it - Unless you're re-building a car engine in the same room . . . sanding serves the same purpose.

Best Regards, Spidey
