In Response To: Deck to Hull joint, how much lip is ok? (Ben Staley)

There were a couple of spots on my Outer Island where I just couldn't force the deck and hull to stay perfectly flush, leaving about as much lip as you're seeing. My hull shear strips had square edges and the deck shear strips were beveled about 25 degrees. The joining process came out great. My deck shear strip is a 1/2-width strip of walnut, though, so any small gaps there might be blend in with the dark walnut. Regardless, when you sand off the lip, you'll be surprised how tight the joint turns out.

In order to avoid seeing any light through the gap, I filled the bevel on the inside of the joint of the shears with thickened epoxy. I had a syringe left over from my Pygmy Arctic Tern, and used it to squeeze a bead of thickened epoxy in the joint just before taping the inside shear. It worked out well.
