WoodenBoat has the plans for the Melonseed (Plan 400-119) for $90. I'm not sure of the building method (wood, of course!), but any carvel can be built as a strip/GRP composite. The common reference Is Nicolson's "Cold-moulded and Strip Planked Wood Boatbuilding", but it gives short shrift to strip planking. While Micheal Verney's "Complete Amateur Boat Building" (International Marine) covers the waterfront, he makes some suggestions for scantlings. Get it from the library.

I think the Mellonseed could be built with 3/8" by 7/8" stips and sheathed with with a couple of layers of 4.2 oz. Dynel. Dynel is very light for its bulk and will soak up a lot of resin. It comforms to complex shapes well, like the hollows fo the Mellonseed's rear quarters. It will absorb 600-800% of the working load of fiberglass of equal weight. The downside is that it results in a heavier while bulletproof boat and you will have to add fillers to your top coats to fill the weave, so it's not for varnished hulls.
Have fun!
