Polyester resin has been used commercially in combination with glass fabric to build boats since the '50s. The major problem with it is that it is not well matched in strength with the glass. Glass is about six times as strong as the resin. This difference results in premature failure of the structure. I think the boat building industry will move to epoxy and vinylester resins to improve product reliability.
