: To work on my Artic Tern 14', I need to buy a decent sander (besides my
: hand). Is an orbital sander much better than a palm sander?

To begin with, the "Palm" sander is just another term used to discribe either/both the "Orbital and Random Orbital" sanders. Basically, most models are held in one hand ( palm ).

Or does it
: matter much?

Either one will do the work. The R.O.S. (random orbital sander) is a bit more aggressive do to the dual-orbits in it's pattern. However, this can sometimes work against you. With the same paper, say 100 grit, the R.O.S. will cut quicker, and leave fewer or smaller scratch marks. When fairing your boat, you could end up with hollows in a big hurry depending on the wood grain and/or glue lines you are working over. This won't be a problem if you pay attention, use higher grit #'s and possibly a variable speed control. Mostly just pay attention. With the std. orbital, as I mentioned, you can do anything the R.O.S. can do except it will take you a bit longer. If you are in a bind $$ wise, then go with the std. as they are a bit cheaper. If you can afford it, then by all means, go for the R.O.S. as has been mentioned. There are a whole lot of furniture pieces out there that were built using the std. sander, and it was the best thing going for years. It Will Work!! The R.O.S. is just faster. Hope that helps!

As for models or makes........ just stay away from the bargain brands and stick with quality. You'll win in the long run.
