: Thanks for the info.

: What design is a walrus?

As Paul mentioned, I took the Walrus 18 1/2' plan forms and am shortening it to around 18'. The 17'er was a bit thin for this Beam, and a beginner.

Also, any tips on bending the strongback before
: putting on the top board?

I'm not sure how you got the bend in the strongback. ??? If it was during construction, due to inaccuracies in matching parts, there's probably no way to get them out. ( if you glued it up ) If you haven't glued it up, then I'd pull it apart and redo. Sounds like a pain in the butt, but, you don't want to build an problems into your strongback if possible. If it's all permanent already, then yes, you can shim the top as you put it on. I left mine lose for that specific reason. It seems no matter how hard you try, there will always be chances of inaccuracies. I just use paper ( folded for thickness ) under the screws if needed.

And, how much deviation should be allowed from
: one end to to the other?

If possible, NONE. But, you can always adjust with your forms or supports. The final piece, the strongback, must be straight.

Mine seems to have developed a belly down of
: about 3/16 inch. I can fix it by shimming the top boards I suppose. Thanks
: for the tips! - Scott

Let us know if there are any more adverse developements as there are always ways to work around difficulties. Wood is very forgiving!!

By the way, there are several Walrus variations that have been built in the past year, so, if you decide to do a Skin On Frame, and want to try this one out, just ask. These guys are a bunch of hams and love to show off their boat. :) It's a quick build compared to the S&G, or Stripper, and reasonably priced depending on Frame material and skin. I've heard around $200 on down to around $140 I believe.
