I would think you should stay away from the oil based stains. I've been playing with this idea for a while, as have others, and the concensus seems to come to using wood dyes instead of stains. These are usually applied mixed with water or alcohol and should leave little or no residue. You want to keep the pores of the wood open so the epoxy can get in. Niether the stain or dye will go deep into the wood, though, so it should be the last step before glassing, i.e. no sanding after applying.

I'd be interested in learning how you made out when you get that far. Good luck.
