In Response To: Shop temperature and alcohol (Severne Johnson)

: I suspected cold viscous epoxy so I checked my basement temperature Friday.
: 66 degrees. I am building a hot box for storing epoxy at 72 degrees and I
: will tent and heat the boat well above room temperature. I also suspected
: air entrained due to mixing so I am being less vigorous. What kind of
: alcohol? Store bought 70 percent isoporpyl/30 percent water?

We used isosol which came in 55 gal. drums. But any alchol used to cut shellac would be OK, which is much stronger then rubbing alcohol. Still, run a test strip. What we did was specialized for the work surface to eliminate bubbles on our tooling surfaces. We mixed a low viscosity surface coat, then heated it under a heat lamp to thin it, then carefully brushed it on with a brush cut to a point. Then we blew a thin stream of compressed air over the surface to further burst any bubbles. Then we pored on the rest of the surface coat in a thicker layer which sometimes pooled as much as a 1/4" in low spots. Then we flipped on the alcohol. I was amazed sometimes to see a big bubble that was traped under the low viscosity pooled epoxy to come to the surface and burst. So it would seem to me that it would be a piece of cake to burst the bubbles on the watery epoxy used on the kayaks.
