In Response To: flour for thickener (Walter Manley)

Wheat flour is about as "strong" as wood flour.

It won't be quite as strong as cabosil, but much stronger than microballoons. It makes a nice "creamed honey" colored filler. I use it as a filler in pine, maple, and spruce, since all the wood flours turn out so much darker when mixed with epoxy.

I was out of thickneners when I made my PVC pumps and used wheat flour-thickened epoxy to glue the spout to the barrel. It's hard to see in the photo below, because it's a pale off-white.

: I just got Nick's book a few day's ago. I noticed in there that he say's
: household flour can be used as a thickener. I'm wondering how strong a
: glue made with it would be?

: I am just finishing a canoe, It is all done except for the seats, and have
: run out of cabosil for making glue. So I am wondering about using flour.
: It would save me having to order some more until I am ready to start the
: next project. Probably a couple of kayaks.
