Floatation

I am ready to start stripping but I am thinking ahead to some floatation for my kayak. I don't know if they will float with 1/4" wood sandwiched between glass or not. I will probably put expandable foam in the bow and stern and maybe under the deck sides. I think if your kayak fills with water it is much more dangerous they most realize. Several years ago three men were fishing in a canoe in a small pond near us when the canoe tipped over and one man who was a marginal swimmer drown. I couldn't figure out why, if all he had to do was grab hold of the canoe. At that time I had a 17 ft aluminun canoe with flotation at each end and so I decided to swamp it and see if I could just grab on. When I grabed onto the sides it just rolled over and over. When I grabed on to the ends, the end sunk and the other end went up into the air. This made me realize just how dangerous this canoe was. The only thing that worked was with two people locking arms on opposite sides of the canoe. It then stablized but you would have still have to have someone rescue you.
