flush hatch covers

I'm getting to the hatch covers on my Guillemot. I've cut out the holes and I am using the cutouts for the covers. I would like the covers to be flush after I put the weatherstrip around the edge. I am thinking of taping some cardboard onto the hatch cover and then taping this in place and doing the 6 or so layers of glass to create the lip. The cardboard will allow for the thickness of the weatherstrip.
Has anyone done anything similar to this or maybe has a better idea?

TIA Don
