Nick's sage advice

Nick is correct that you need to carefully define your goals before you start but realize also that over time your goals will likely change. What's important today for your boat may not be tomorrow.

For example when I first built my Expedition Single I stated that "there was no way I was going to drill holes into my hull for footpegs and uglify the boat!!!" now three years later I've gotten over this pride thing and realize that safety and reliability are more important to me than looks (and it doesn't even look that bad!). Also when I first finished the boat there were also some minor construction issues that really bugged me, they don't any more.

You would think that Nick who makes a living out of building boats would be the fussiest of everyone around about cosmetic issues, but he's not! When building your first boat the construction and looks of your kayak appear to be every thing however in the long run it's only a small part of the total kayaking experience. So take Nick's sage advice and choose a construction technique thats right for you but don't loose the forrest from the trees.
