alternatives to wood

I have recently taken my Chesapeake 17 on a multiday trip on the Canadian Shield of Georgian Bay and found several dings in the hull that will need some repair in the near future, particularly at the bow and stern. My buddy, in his plastic boat, could bash his boat into any imaginable obstacle care free. I was know my boat looks more pleasing to the eye etc, etc. However, is there any alternative material that can provide plastic like durability and yet be easy to work like wood? I am interested for future boat projects, particularly for hull panels on kayaks or a river dory.
