Dean,

You do have mounting points on your new 99 or 00 Golf, they are just not as obvious as on most cars. At the right rear under the bumper there is a towing ring with a black plastic cover. Pull off the cover and you are good to go at the rear. The front is a little trickier. Look at your spare tire and the styrofoam insert that holds the jack etc. In one of the nooks you will find a towing eye with a threaded shaft. It's about 5" long and yellowish metal. Go to the right front and gently remove the small black plastic grill under the headlight. Inside you will find a threaded socket for the tow eye. It screwws in counter-clockwise. With the Golf there is not a lot of distance between the towers so tie-downs are important, especially if driving in cross winds like you'd probably encounter crossing the Mackinac bridge.
: Due to a lack of mounting points on my new Golf, I now only use straps on the
: Thule rack, and it works out quite well. I haven't been across the
: Mackinac Bridge (5-mile-long-hundreds-of-feet-high suspension bridge
: connecting the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan) with this set-up
: yet, though. It held well on the high bridge of the Chicago Skyway last
: weekend.
