In Response To: Ultra-low volume kayaks (Berkeley C.)

Below is a picture of Nigel Dennis' Greenlander fiberglass kayak from the Great River Outfitters site. While it has a low deck, it can accomodate us non-Inuits because the circular cockpit is tilted at about a 30-degree angle. This makes it easier for longer legs to slide into compared to the traditional flat circular cockpit. Some people are leery of such a small cockpit, with fears that they wouldn't be able to extricate themselves in a hurry, but when you're upside-down and bouyant, exiting is smooth.

If you've seen Chris Cunningham's stitch-n-glue design (taken from his skin-on-frame boat dimensions) in the Fall '94 issue of Sea Kayaker, I think that a N.D. Greenlander-style cockpit could easily be custom added.

: I have seen some very low volume West Greenland style boats that I'd like to
: emulate, except they require a legs straight out position and a shoehorn
: to enter. Does anybody have a design for a greenland with low deck lines
: while maintaning a reasonably spacious cockpit? (The CLC North Bay is
: still on the big side).
