Hi Travis, In reality it takes about 1.5 quarts thinned 10-15% with the appropriate thinner. This assumes an average 17.5 foot canoe with 3-4 coats inside and out. The amount of thinner obviously will makes a difference and it applies equally to the ease of brushing and quality of the finished surface. Unthinned varnish doesn't behave very well (sags, drips, brush marks) and takes a lot longer to dry. I use z*spar flagship varnish and the thinner for that is T10. I also use Epifanes 333 brushing liquid which is an unrelated product but is excellent. To find out how I approach varnishing check out the link below and select 'Varnishing'. It has more detail than I can describe here.

: I was told that 1 quart of varnish would be enough for my canoe. I have
: varnish two seat frames times four and four gunwales times three. I have
: one coat on the inside of my boat and only have one quarter of the can
: left. I did not thin the Interlux Varnish at all and I think that was and
: expensive mistake. What should have I done and what do you use to thin
: varnish? Thanks Trav
