Sounds like an ideal material to use in 3/16 thickness rather than 1/4 inch thickness strips. You cut 25% off of the weight, and the difference in strength going from 1/4 down to 3/16 is hard to evaluate with western red cedar, so using a stronger wood seems ideal.

Get ebony and do a bumble bee motif in black and yellow?
