I would rather have a little plastic deformation than a more serious break. A permanent dent or bend is certainly not as good as no damage at all, but a material that yields, even permanently, is better than one that gives way completely and breaks. The old Grumman Aluminum canoes are good examples of this. They get very beat up and dented yet keep on floating.
