Paint thinner is a distillate of petroleum and while used to clean surfaces and brushes, can leave slighly oily residue behind....hence the smell that lingers after the volatile components have evaporated.

alcohol is a good choice as a cleaner because it is relatively safe and doesn't leave a residue...but it does not "cut" as wide a range of contaminants as stonger solvents like acetone or paint thinner.....heed the warnings about acetone....its not good for you!

TSP, or TriSodiumPhosphate is a strong surfactant (bascially a soap) that emulsifies greases and oils (ie. it makes the oils more mixable with water)....while I've never used it to clean expoxy, i doubt very much that it will have any reaction with the cured epoxy.....but I also don't see the need to use such a strong soap in the normal boat building environment....unless you are re-habing an old boat with lots of dirt and grease...TSP is commonly used by house painters for cleaning prior to painting.
