It works well, I built a whitewater boat where the fist layer was a flag mural fabric, it looks real good, there is some metal flake in the gel coat to give it a sparkle. my only concern would be sanding since it is not a female mold like mine. Also the varnish will change the fabric colors, and consider fading. My cloth was 50/50 cotton/poly but I have heard that it best to go with synthetics.
