For Christmas my parents got me a Suunto compass that attaches to the deck via 2 bungee cords and hooks to your deck lines. No custom mounting required. And only $40 (I asked for it, so I knew how much it was) -- cheap for a kayak compass. I haven't had one before, so I can't say much about quality, but it is liquid-filled so the needle moves gently. Mine is bright yellow -- I didn't know they also came in black.
