The closer you put the rear bulkhead to your butt, the less water you'll have to pump out when you get swamped. But some people leave 3" or so behind the coaming to allow a bit of extra storage space for paddle floats, etc.

I don't remember if it's in Nick's book, but Jay Babina's instructions call for a breather hole in the bulkhead to reduce pressure in a tighly sealed hatch area. Drill a 1/4" or so hole near the top of the bulkhead, fill it with epoxy, then after it's cured, drill a pin-sized hole thru the epoxy.
