The first coat on my canvas kayak was a well thinned zinc type metal primer over which there are two coats of marine enamel. The primer has to fully saturate the canvas. I've used no filler and the surface is quite smooth, this mainly due to using 10 oz canvas rather than #10 canvas and sanding off the fuzz after the first coat.

My kayak has been stored outside but under cover in the Pacific Northwest for over 5 years with no sign of mildew.
