Julie, I can't tell you about too mant other styles, but at our shop we settled on one about ten years ago and have been building on the same type ever since. I even split my kayaks at the sheer and build both patrs seperatly. I use what you are probably calling a box style, but it's built like this. I take two of the straightest, dryest 2by4's that I can find (most of my boxes are 16')and screw and glue them to the edges of a 16' 1x12 (also as straight and clean as I can find). I then screw and glue some short "rungs" under the middle and the end and space out a couple more. This box type can be the set on saw horses, milk crates or whatever to use, and when not in use it's easy to store, I make all my forms to work above the strongbank, so I can use it for a lot of different sized boats. with all the peices glued and screwed together I only ever had one warp, and now I use that for the base of my shaper for bead and cove strips.
