Hi Tim,

Most of the items that we see made from flint have "pressure flaked" to shape the piece and produce the serated edge that you are referring. Glass, which is also classed as lithic and can be shapes in the same way.

Lithic materials [flint, chert, obsidian to name a few] can be "precussion flaked" to knock off large conchoidal flakes suitable for scraping and cutting.

Since it is likely that the early kayaks were made with lithic tools I don't think this is too far off topic. Interesting stuff.
