I start with a square full length shaft.

Ive make a simple jig for my table saw that holds the shaft at a slight angle (2 degrees?) to the blade. its designed so that when the jig, with it the shaft on it, slide in the slot for the cross-cut-square thingy the saw cuts a shallow wedge off. this leaves the tip end of the shaft thinner than the handle end. Rotate the shaft 180 to do the other side. flip end for end and rotate 90 deg for the other end. now you have the ends trimmed for 90 deg feather. If you tilt the blade 10 deg to the left you remove 10 degrees from each blade yielding 70 degrees. any other angle can be done. Oh! start with the tip of the shaft facing the saw blade to the left of the saw blade.

You could just use a plane for one paddle.

With the ends of the shaft cut, i glue the blades on as per nicks book.

I always have to scratch my head when making a paddle to make sure the angles will work out right. hold the shaft in your hand and paddle a few times befor cutting.
