Drips are a part of life when laying on the cloth. I found that my little hand plane did a dandy job at shaving down the drips. I was able to knock all mine down flush this way in about an hour or so. If you chose this method, the only caution I would give is to not do it with gusto. The blade will life the cloth with the nicest of curls if you try to get it too perfect.
