Beveling Shear Clamps

I could use some advice on beveling the shear clamps (on my CLC Chesapeake LT16) prior to installing the deck. There's precious little advice on how to do this in the manuals, and I've seen very little about it on the various Internet sites I visit.

I know about creating a template using the outer radius of the two deck beams, but is that the only "help" one can get? It seems a little intimidating trying to plane (or sand) a bevel that tapers from a fairly large radius near the cockpit to basically flat at the bow and stern using only a template and my amateur's eyes.

Any tricks or words of advice and/or encouragement would be appreciated.

Peter (remove the NS from the beginning of my email address if you wish to email me directly).
