Dennis:

I suggest going for a scanner option, because: a) If you have been a serious amateur photographer (you've got a well equipped SLR) you might know that you can't get the same resolution in some digitally print paper than in regular photo paper; b) You don't want to turn on the computer each time you want to see again your pics; c) Scanning your paper pics you can decide the size, definition, etc. of each pic. (Even if you've got a 600 MB CD full of pics, you wouldn't want to have those MB monsters in your web site) and d) You can scan drawing, sketches, etc. for posting questions or suggestions regarding your boat building!

As for the kind of film, I would go for a 400 ASA. Don't worry about the grain, OK? Scanning a regular 4 x 6 pic results in an image that almost cover an entire 14" CRT monitor. You can downsize it 75% and make the 400 ASA grain disappear.

Hope this helps.
