Ed, I'am not really using cleats as described in Nick's book, I'am using spacers and wedges (Mike Allen method)In my case each spacer is attached by drilling and tapping my aluminum beam. I wanted to make sure I was doing the changeover at mid boat correctly before adding more spacers.
