You can never have enough floatation. If you do not have hatches, as much of the space behind your back and beyond your feet should be filled w/ airbags as possible. Yer not going to conserve much weight by not using it, and space is variable if you use airbags( blow up more or less depending on gear)

You only have to try to rescue a boat (let alone people) w/ minimal floatation once to be a raving advocate for as much as possible.
