Soon to be land locked - Hello Dallas

My situation is reversed, In December, I am moving from Seattle to Dallas. Do you have any survival tips for a sea kayaker in the DFW area? I doubt I'll be able to do much Orca watching in Lake Ray Hubbard. I am currently finishing up a Pygmy Coho (my first kayak) and her maiden voyage will probably be in Texas. Is a flatwater kayak appropriate for touring the rivers in Texas?
