Not too long ago Wooden Boat had an article on longleaf pine. It was an exceptionally good wood for boat building and has been logged for so long that not many commercially viable stands remain. It is commercially sold under the category "Southern Pine" and you can get at least four species in that category. Your best source might be a small sawyer who has a woodlot or knows where to get what you want and knows what it is you want.
