The rack on my topper is handmade. I made the 3 crossbars 1 1/8" diameter so they will also accommodate Yakima accessories. The middle bar is sometimes in the way and unnecessary for carrying boats, but it is nice for carrying bikes or skis with my Yak bike and ski racks.

For your situation, I can think of two good options:

1) Buy a single Yakima or Thule rack and mount it on the cab. Build a receiver hitch mount with a horizontal crossbar at the same level as the cab rack.

2) Build a rack that mounts on the sides of your bed. Something like my rack, but with legs that go down to bedrail level and not just down on the topper. Use a piece of angle inside the side of the bed, or a piece of flat steel that just rests on the surface of the side of the bed. Put as many crossbars as you want on this rack. This way, you could set it on over the toolbox/tonneau cover, or you could slide your topper inside the frame and use it with the camper shell. Sound workable?
